Using the app

Moving between verses. Swipe left for the next verse and right for the previous one, or use the arrow buttons at the bottom. Going back from the first verse takes you to the fifteenth, and forward from the fifteenth returns to the first.

Changing the speed. Tap the button on the left of the controls to cycle through normal, faster and slower. The speed you pick stays put when you move to another verse.

Repeating one verse. Tap the repeat button on the right. While it is on, the verse you are on plays again each time it finishes instead of moving to the next one. Tap it again to turn it off.

Listening with the screen off. Audio continues when you lock the phone. Play, pause and skip appear on the Lock Screen and in Control Center, and the progress bar there tracks the recitation.

Common questions

There is no sound. Check that the silent switch on the side of your iPhone is not set to silent, and that the volume is up. The app plays through the main audio channel, so it will also be quiet if another app has taken over audio.

The app stopped when I unplugged my headphones. That is deliberate. It pauses rather than suddenly playing out loud through the speaker. Press play to continue.

Playback stopped when I took a call. Also deliberate. It pauses for the call and picks up again when the interruption ends.

The text is too small. The app follows your system text size. Go to Settings, then Display & Brightness, then Text Size, and move the slider. For larger sizes still, use Settings, then Accessibility, then Display & Text Size, then Larger Text.

Does it need an internet connection? No. Everything is included in the download, so it works in aeroplane mode and anywhere with no signal.

Does it cost anything? No. The app is free, has no purchases inside it, and shows no advertising.

Reporting a problem with the text

The recitation marks matter, and mistakes in them are worth fixing. If you spot a verse where the Devanagari, the transliteration or the audio looks or sounds wrong, please write and say which verse number and what you expected. Corrections from people who know the text well are genuinely welcome.

Which devices it runs on

Durga Sukhtam runs on iPhone and iPad with iOS 17 or later. If you are on an older version of iOS, the App Store will offer you the last release that supported your device.
