Common questions
How do I start logging?
Add the placement, internship or work experience you're on from the Home screen, then log a few lines each day with Log today's entry. You can type, dictate a voice note, or photograph handwritten notes — Propel cleans the text up and tags it automatically.
Why is the app asking for microphone, speech, camera or photo access?
Each permission unlocks one way of logging: microphone and speech recognition for voice notes, camera and photo library for handwritten notes. All processing happens on your phone. You can decline any of them and still log by typing — nothing else in the app depends on them.
Where is my data stored?
Entirely on your iPhone. Propel has no account, no server and no upload — see the privacy statement. That also means we can't recover your journal for you, so take a backup before you delete the app.
How do I back up my journal?
Settings → Back up my data. Propel writes everything — your profile, experiences, entries, competency tags and the CV sections, LinkedIn posts, tutor reports and weekly digests it has generated — to a single file you can save to Files, email to yourself, or keep anywhere you like.
Voice notes and photos aren't included: Propel transcribes them when you record them and never plays them back, so the words are in your entries either way. The file is plain, unencrypted JSON, so treat it like any other personal document — anyone you share it with can read it.
I deleted the app. Can I get my journal back?
If you took a backup, yes. Reinstall Propel and tap Coming back? Restore from a backup on the welcome screen, then pick your file — you don't need to set up a profile first.
Without a backup, no. Deleting an app removes its data from your iPhone, and Propel keeps no copy anywhere else.
How do I move Propel to a new iPhone?
If you transfer or restore your new phone from your old one, Propel comes across with everything else and there's nothing to do.
If you're setting the new phone up fresh, take a backup on the old phone (Settings → Back up my data), save it somewhere both phones can reach, install Propel on the new one, and restore it from the welcome screen.
What happens if I restore a backup over data I already have?
Propel asks first. Add to what's here fills in anything missing and leaves entries you've changed since the backup alone — restoring the same file twice changes nothing. Replace everything deletes what's currently in the app first, and can't be undone.
The AI summaries look generic on my device. Why?
Propel's writing features use Apple Intelligence on the device. On iPhones without Apple Intelligence, Propel falls back to built-in templates — everything still works, the wording is just less tailored.
I forgot my PIN.
If Face ID is enabled you can still unlock with your face and change the PIN in Settings. If the PIN is your only unlock method, it can't be recovered — the PIN is stored as a one-way hash, so there is nothing for us to look up. The app would have to be deleted and reinstalled, which erases its data; if you have a backup you can restore it from the welcome screen afterwards.
How do I delete everything?
Delete the app, or use Settings → Delete account to wipe your data and start again without reinstalling. Propel keeps no copy anywhere else, so either removes the journal completely.
Backup files are the exception — they're yours, saved wherever you put them, and deleting the app doesn't touch them. Delete them separately if you want everything gone.
